Twitter is finding out first-hand regarding the challenges of eliminating racial bias in algorithms. The social neighborhood’s Liz Kelley said the company had “further analysis” to do after cryptographic engineer Tony Arcieri conducted an experiment suggesting Twitter’s algorithm was biased in prioritizing pictures. When attaching pictures of Barack Obama and Mitch McConnell to tweets, Twitter appeared to fully highlight McConnell’s face — Obama solely popped up when Arcieri inverted the colors, making pores and pores and skin color a non-issue.

Others tried reversing {photograph} and determine orders to no avail. A greater-contrast smile did work, Intertheory’s Kim Sherrell found. Scientist Matt Blaze, within the meantime, noticed that the priority appeared to vary counting on the official Twitter app used. Tweetdeck was further neutral, for instance.
