China says it’s conducting military exercises near the Taiwan Strait to “defend its sovereignty” as a excessive US official visits Taiwan.

The live-fire drills occur amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington, and since the US strikes to shore up its help of the island.

China regards self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province.

Keith Krach is the highest-level official from the US State Division to go to the island in a few years.
